The Walnut Humidor

A good friend of mine has helped my family out a lot over the last couple of years without ever hesitating. He also gave me some walnut a while back that had been on his late grandfathers farm for “probably 50 years, just sitting in the barn”. He mentioned in passing once that it would be nice to have a humidor, so here we are. To thank him, I built him a humidor with wood that holds sentimental value to him.

The Wood

This box is primarily made of Walnut that looked pretty rough in the beginning as 4/4 rough sawn lumber that sat in a barn for decades. However, once I planed past the grime, I found some gorgeous grain hiding beneath.

The lining is made of un-finished Spanish Cedar, typical of a humidor.

The Finish

The walnut part of the box was sprayed with between 8 and 10 coats of gloss “Instrument Lacquer”. The top was then wet sanded up to 12,000 grit and then hit with wax polish to give it the mirror finish.
