The Small Kumiko Box
A small box yet elegant box. The person who commissioned this piece wanted something simple yet elegant but most importantly had to fit on a certain small shelf they had. This small box fit the bill perfectly.
The Wood
This box is primarily made of Peruvian Walnut, which is a tad darker than normal walnut. The kumiko lattice work is made of Basswood which is a light hardwood that has a very subtle grain that does not distract from the kumiko pattern itself. For stability, the top and bottom of made of high quality 1/4โ Baltic Birch plywood.
The Finish
Before assembly, I painted the top with a blue milk paint from General Finishes called Halcyon Blue. Once it was ready for final finishing, the box (with the Kumiko lattice removed) received six coats of matte lacquer. Once the lacquer dried I was able to put the Kumiko pattern snugly back on the lid which is all friction fit.
